Atemi Waza
The Atemi Waza class focuses on developing the skills needed to effectively strike the vital areas of the body. This class will cover all aspects of Atemi Waza, including Ate Waza (hand striking techniques), Geri Waza (kicking techniques), Uke Waza (blocking techniques), and Kyusho (vital points of the body). Each of the techniques is designed to blend seamlessly with the Nage Waza and Ne Waza taught at our school.
The training methods used in class are designed to develop the speed, power, control, and accuracy needed for effective striking under a variety of conditions (free standing, clinch fighting, and ground fighting). Beginning students will focus on developing basic striking and blocking skills. Later, as these skills become more proficient, students will move on to more advanced training drills, including Kumite (free sparring).
The primary focus of this training will be to develop striking skills for self-defense situations. However, tournament specific techniques will be taught to those who wish to compete. Students participating in Kumite will be required to purchase appropriate safety gear.
Flexibility training will be integral part of this class. At the beginning of class, warm-up exercises and dynamic stretching will be used to prepare the body for training. The last half hour of class will be devoted to isometric stretching (to improve flexibility) and passive stretching (to cool-down). All of these techniques have been tailored to the needs of the Judoka and are designed to maximize your potential. For more information about the flexibility training methods used in this class, please refer to Stretching Scientifically: A Guide to Flexibility Training by Thomas Kurz.
The Atemi Waza class is for adults only. Students of all ranks are welcome.
