Jujitsu

Jujitsu (Self Defense Techniques)
The SJJ Jujitsu class is aimed at teaching men and women modern, realistic self-defense.  Our techniques are designed to be maximally effective with a minimum of training and effort in order to equip our students with the tools they need to survive as soon as possible.  In addition to learning how to defend yourself, you can also expect to have fun, gain confidence and make friends with interesting people.

Jujitsu includes foot and hand strikes, throws, joint locks, chokes, weapons techniques (both conventional and improvised) and ground fighting (grappling) techniques.  It is often considered to be one of the more well-rounded martial arts.  While all martial arts have some self-defense application, most are practiced as sports where fighting (also called sparring or randori) is governed by rules and takes place between two fighters in a controlled environment.  We believe that you will fight the way you practice - these rules can get in the way of practical self-defense, especially against multiple opponents or experienced fighters.  A Jujitsoka is not bound by these rules and is encouraged to use anything in his or her environment to maximum advantage.

No martial arts experience or specific athletic ability is required to take Jujitsu, however we ONLY teach Jujitsu to adults or teens accompanied by a parent and we reserve the right to refuse instruction to anyone who does not follow our dojo rules.  SJJ accepts beginning students at any time.  All new students should expect to spend their first month learning basic techniques and principles of self-defense, including simple strikes, joint locks, chokes, throws and how to fall safely.  After the beginning student is comfortable with falling they will be integrated into the regular class.  A typical class includes warm-ups, practice falling, self-defense repetition sets, terminology review and new technique instruction.

If you show up with the desire and the determination to learn how to defend yourself you will succeed.  Our techniques work by exploiting the inherent weaknesses found in the human body and by turning the strength of an attacker upon him or herself.  You do not have to be 6'4'' / 225 lbs. in order to defeat an attacker on the street - the knowledge and preparation acquired by studying Jujitsu can allow anyone to successfully defend against a larger, stronger attacker.
